Super Smash Bros. Joins the Nintendo 3DS 1 Million Sold Club

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS was released less than a month ago, but the game has already sold over 1.2 million copies both physically and digitally. The game joins nine others in the Nintendo catalog that have passed 1 million copies on the 3DS.

  1. Mario Kart 7 -- 3.62 million
  2. Super Mario 3D Land -- 3.34 million
  3. New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- 2.33 million
  4. Pokemon X -- 2.11 million
  5. Pokemon Y -- 2.03 million
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D -- 1.41 million
  7. Luigiā€™s Mansion: Dark Moon -- 1.36 million
  8. Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- 1.42 million
  9. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS -- 1.20 million
  10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds -- 1.06 million

Nintendo adds that in October, Smash Bros. sold 485,000 copies, and that it's "the best-selling handheld title so far in 2014." However, Nintendo notes that Smash will face stiff competition to hold onto that title come November with the release of Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

The Wii U is closing out on a strong year as well with a 47% increase in hardware sales and an 84% percent increase in software sales over last year during the same period. And the pending release of Smash for the home console will likely only increase that footprint.

Of course, a lot more people own a 3DS than a Wii U, but the popularity of the series and its strong performance on 3DS is a strong predictor for continuing Wii U growth through the holidays. After all, Smash Bros. only came out on one system last month, 3DS, but it was still the number two selling game overall in the US.
