TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE WEEK Day 1- DST’s SDCC 2014 Leonardo Minimate

This is a couple of worlds colliding for me.    I’ve been a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles since the second issue of their original comic book series back in the 80′s and I’ve been a Minimates fan from the beginning as well, all the way back to when they were 2.5″ tall.   At Toy Fair, in February, Diamond Select Toys announced they had the license to do Minimates of the current Nickelodeon TMNT animated series and showed off the 4 turtles to press and buyers, but no photography was allowed.

Fast forward to last week at SDCC 2014 and the 4 turtle minimates and more of the cast were on display at the DST booth, which you can see here in our gallery section.   At the SDCC DST Minimates panel were were told that these figures would ship to stores in blind bagged assortments (blind BAGGED, not blind BOXED if you want to “Lego Whisper” the bags and see who you are getting) and that they will be available at mass retailers such as Toys R Us and Kmart as well as available to the direct market.

At Comic Con, fans had a shot at getting 2 promotional turtles, free as a give-away.  The blue translucent Leonardo was given away at scheduled times at the DST booth.   The orange translucent Michelangelo was given away randomly at the Nickelodeon booth.   I will be curious to see if we will be able to get the rest of the team (Don and Raph) in this translucent form at an upcoming show (like NYCC?).    We were also told there would be one “chase” translucent green “mutagen” turtle (I THINK they said it would be Raph)  randomly inserted in the first assortment.

Here is a turn-around of the figure:

The figure does have his eyes and mouth tampo printed on the head and the two swords are removable from the scabbards.

As always, DST is very clever in what parts they are able to re-use and what parts are new.   The main buck in use is the torso, upper arms, pelvis and upper legs.  The knee pads and elbow pads are part of the lower extremities and the front and back shell are just a bib that slides over the figure.  The hands look to be newly sculpted with the wraps on them and the masks do not appear removable from the heads.  I was told that each of the bandana ties were a different sculpt as well.

This give-away figure was packaged in a clear pollybag with an SDCC 2014 TMNT sticker on it.

We will have lots more TMNT stuff to show you this week on AFi!
