The Best Horror Movies And TV Shows Of 2023 (So Far)

Many of the best horror stories in 2023's films and TV series encompass and touch on themes that can be particularly startling, including ideas such as the meaning of consciousness, pondering and going beyond the meaning and ramifications of derealization, and of course, the classic but also terrifying slasher situation, which has helped shape 2023 into one of the best years in horror films yet.

2023 isn't over yet, and we haven't even reached Halloween season, which always brings at least a few essential, frightful films or TV episodes, but there are already six must-see pieces of horror media from 2023 to stream at home. And while the giant bowl of popcorn and decorative bowls of individual candies aren't required, they always help with vibes and fun for the best time of the year.

Here are GameSpot's six essential pieces of horror media from 2023 that you've gotta stream.

1. M3gan

M3gan had a limited premiere in December 2022 but fully released in early 2023, unleashing one of the first instant horror classics of the year on audiences.

M3gan is a story about a woman named Gemma (portrayed wonderfully by Allison Williams), who is drowning in stress, as she simultaneously grapples with the loss of her sister, who just died suddenly in a car accident, while also trying to take care of her orphaned niece. Of course, this all comes while she's already balancing tight deadlines at the high-tech toy company Funki, where she works as a roboticist.

There is no room for anything to go wrong, even a little bit, in Gemma's life.

And then Gemma designs and creates M3gan, a cutting-edge robotic doll and play assistant that's built with artificial intelligence. At first, all of Gemma's issues vanish as her neice finds a friend in M3gan. Then, though, people around Gemma begin to disappear, as M3gan's AI starts to reveal just how dastardly it can be.

M3gan is available to stream on Prime Video.

2. Infinity Pool

Infinity Pool follows a poor and struggling writer and his wife on a vacation that will haunt them both for as long as they live, but it starts out so nice. A beautiful and secluded tourist spot that's become quite popular with the ultra-wealthy and elite members of high society is hiding a sinister secret that never stops once it starts.

Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård both star and provide unforgettable, haunting performances that will linger with you, long after the end credits have rolled. Infinity Pool offers up Rod Serling levels of thrilling horror, with biting commentary on derealization, what it means to live, and just how far a person can go if they start to wonder if they're even a person anymore, culminating in one of the most essential horror films of 2023.

As a trigger warning, Infinity Pool does feature a large amount of gore and unsettling situations, even for a horror film, so be aware if you are sensitive to such things. Then again, what would you expect from a film by writer/director Brandon Cronenberg (Possessor)?

Infinity Pool is available to stream on Hulu.

3. Black Mirror, Part 6

Black Mirror became a cautionary tale for everyone, much in the same way as Rod Serling would often warn us in episodes of The Twilight Zone, but the british horror hit has always leaned hard into technology and even more into how we see ourselves, how we see each other, and how we can see and view the world that's all around us.

The sixth and newest season of episodes in the long-running anthology series packs just as much of an existential gut punch as previous stories in the series have in the past. But Season 6 spends even more time on derealization and that sinking, looming feeling that maybe after all of this, there really might not be anything else left.

Five new stories join the series with the latest release, and while each episode is worth a watch, three in particular join this year's best horror selections that should keep audiences stirring long after 2023 has ended.

Joan is Awful stars Annie Murphy in a nail-biting performance as someone who is forced to watch herlife and everything about it evaporate right in front of her eyes. It's all thanks to her streaming service app, which has been collecting content from her life to use as an AI-generated streaming series for anyone who wants to watch, including her husband, employees, parents, and friends. Joan is Awful ultimately cracks open all of the preconceived notions that our society and culture hand us, pushing existential questions, including just how far any of us would go to preserve our own understanding of what being alive means.

Loch Henry is a clever story about two college students working on a film project that gives them both far more than they ever wanted. It starts out as two friends having a good time on a more lighthearted project before transforming into a true crime-style documentary after one of them learns something about the other's past, which includes a dark secret about Loch Henry, the small town they're both filming in, paving way for something much different and far more sinister. Loch Henry is about many things, but it features commentary on how our society uses and sees pain and trauma, and the lengths we will go or not go to resolve it.

Beyond the Sea is one of the most intense storylines that actor Aaron Paul has been involved in--and yes, we've seen Breaking Bad--but this alternate-history, bad romance in outer space story is absolutely out of this world. Starring two astronauts in space who are able to visit home during off hours through the use of "artificial replica" bodies (which are located on and kept back on Earth), Beyond the Sea explores love, death, and even cracks open how men can choose to see themselves in the face of tragedy and pain.

Gorgeous, horror-inducing sights and sweeping, nightmarish sequences are all waiting for you in Season 6 of Black Mirror, which can be streamed on Netflix.

4. Scream 6

If you're looking for classic slasher scares with a modern style and flair, Scream 6 has got your back--with a long and bloodied blade, wielded by a ghost faced killer.

Scream 6 brings Gale Weathers and the gang back together for another chance at staying alive and not getting stabbed to death, and it's another high bar for Wes Craven's long-running, horror franchise.

Scream 6 may be one of the most chaotic Scream films, with everyone left guessing where the cuts are coming from, with plenty of close calls and even some deaths you just won't see coming, as the survivors of Woodsboro legacy murders start getting hunted down by a new Ghostface killer in New York City.

Scream 6 is available to stream on Paramount+.

5. Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise is the full, groovy package making 2023 a great time to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, especially since Bruce Campbell has said there are plans for future installments and stories in the Evil Dead franchise and universe.

Evil Dead Rise faithfully adapts everything that has always worked about Evil Dead, including the wacky, zany humor and the over-the-top, demonic scares, and even manages to change a few things with the formula, including the location, which is brought out of the woods and its isolated cabin, and into the city.

The latest Evil Dead release more than rises to the occasion and even manages to subvert audience expectations while cracking open the future of the series in some truly interesting ways, making Evil Dead Rise a worthy addition to the classic horror series.

6. Skinamarink

Costing no more than fifteen thousand dollars to create, Skinamarink is a clever amalgamation of stylish filmmaking and a unique script wrapped around a shadowy, offscreen figure seemingly tormenting kids that are supposed to be asleep in bed.

Skinamarink follows four-year-old Kevin and six-year-old Kaylee as they maneuver otherworldly horrors, while their parents are seemingly missing, and it all takes place in the middle of the night. A shrinking house, with nothing and no one around to comfort them, except a barely audible and dimly lit TV set, the two kids encounter an evil voice that starts to torment them – and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Dim lighting, fuzzy colors, and seeing it all unfold through the unreliable narration of scared children may help obfuscate the details but Skinamarink is chilling regardless of how you interpret its story.

Skinamarink is available to stream on Hulu.
