Valve promises an “event” as Steam Trading Cards leave beta

Steam Trading Cards open to all as Valve hints at what could be this year's Steam Summer Sale.

Valve's Steam Trading Cards will leave beta this Wednesday, the publisher has announced.

All Steam users will gain access to the trading cards on June 26 at 11am PDT. "Making trading cards available to all Steam users is a step towards an event we think everyone can be excited about," said Valve.

The event could possibly be this year's Steam Summer Sale, which has traditionally started at a similar time of the year. 2012's sale began on July 10, with 2011's kicking off on June 30.

Features such as trade offers and a card binder won't be available in the Steam Trading Cards system at launch, adds Valve, but will be incorporated at a later date.

Steam Trading Cards are dropped randomly when playing an applicable game, but only around half of the available cards will be given to any player through the system: the rest have to be traded with other players.

The beta for Steam Trading Cards launched in May 2013 with support mostly for Valve's own games, but the service has grown to currently include support for 33 titles: Borderlands 2, Sanctum 2, Don't Starve, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Magicka, Strike Suit Infinity, Zack Zero, Bit.Trip Runner 2, Team Fortress 2, Brutal Legend, Cubemen 2, Anodyne, FTL, Super Meat Boy, Monster Loves You!, Trine 2, Go Home Dinosaurs!, Triple Town, Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten, Serious Sam 3, Tower Wars, They Bleed Pixels, Jagged Alliance - Back in Action, A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda, Blocks That Matter, Really Big Sky, Faerie Solitaire, Dota 2, and 1’ 2’ 3’ Kick it! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby).
