Why Overstrike was renamed Fuse

Insomniac Games creative director Brian Allgeier explains that as development progressed on co-op shooter, a name change "made more sense" due to story elements; no PC version planned.

Last month, Insomniac Games' four-player co-op shooter Overstrike was renamed Fuse. Gamers who enjoyed the Overstrike title may be lamenting the change, but according to creative director Brian Allgeier, the rebranding simply "made more sense" because of story elements.

"As we were developing the game, earlier on we started come up with this alien substance called Fuse. And the more we started exploring what Fuse could do, we were excited about focusing the whole game around it," Allgeier told GameSpot. "That became the core element of the game. And so it just made more sense to call the game Fuse."

"We really want to create a cohesive experience for players," he added. "We never want to feel restricted by the earlier decisions we made in development."

The story for Fuse goes that the United States government has spent many years experimenting with a secret alien substance called fuse, which when combined with earthly materials, is used to create devastating weaponry. A rogue paramilitary organization elects to steal the fuse technology, and a task force (the player) is called in to track it down.

Fuse is Insomniac Games' first multiplatform title. It is due out in March 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Allgeier said a PC version is not currently planned. For more on Fuse, check out GameSpot's most recent preview.
