Wonderful 101 originally had cast of all-star Nintendo characters

Director Hideki Kamiya says original version of the game planned with roster of all-star Nintendo characters and other famous extras.

Platinum Games' Wii U title The Wonderful 101 was originally conceived with a roster of Nintendo characters and other famous gaming headliners, producer Hideki Kamiya told Videogamer today at Gamescom.

"Originally, I got an order from the president of Platinum Games, Tatsuya Minami, asking me to create a game idea that had an all-star cast of Nintendo characters plus characters from other games and that's how the project started," Kamiya said.

"When you try and incorporate many characters with high popularity, there are fans who like certain characters more than others," he added. "I thought how I could satisfy everyone and make everyone happy and I came up with the idea of why not having everyone displayed in the game at the same time. That's where the idea was born."

This version of the game that would later become The Wonderful 101 was put on hold, Kamiya said. When Platinum Games did return to it, Kamiya said the game was changed to feature various original hero characters instead of established icons like Mario or Zelda.

The Wonderful 101 launches exclusively for Wii U this week in Europe and September 15 in North America. For more, check out GameSpot's review.
