Microsoft launches Xbox Enforcement United program

New player-run program will crowdsource community opinion to determine if certain content violates Xbox Live Code of Conduct.

Microsoft today launched a service called Xbox Enforcement United, a program that allows users to help determine if other players are violating the Xbox Live Code of Conduct.

A beta version of the program is live now and is open only to Xbox Live Ambassadors who meet age, Gamerscore, and Xbox Live tenure requirements. Microsoft intends to open the program up to a broader community when the beta comes to a close. Gamers interested in taking part in the beta can head to the program's new website.

The Xbox Enforcement United program will crowdsource community opinion about content found on Xbox Live, beginning with Gamertags, that may be in violation of the Xbox Live Code of Conduct.

Those in the program will be asked to identify questionable content as it relates to profane words/phrases, topics or content of a sexual nature, hate speech, sensitive historic/current events, as well as various "sound alike" or "look alike" words or phrases, potentially masked by l33t speek, phonetic tricks, or multiple languages.

These opinions are then fed into an algorithm developed by Microsoft's enforcement team to determine if "enforcement action" is needed, like mandating a user change their Gamertag to something more appropriate.

More information about the Xbox Enforcement United program is available in a blog post from Xbox Live policy and enforcement team member Glenn Kaleta.

Microsoft also today gave new details on the Xbox One's reputation system that promises "no more cheats or jerks."

Wolfenstein: The New Order delayed

Bethesda pushes MachineGames' upcoming shooter into 2014 due to a need for polish.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has been delayed into 2014, Bethesda Softworks vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines told Polygon today. The game was previously scheduled to launch this fall on current- and next-generation platforms.

Hines said several factors led Bethesda to delay MachineGames' new shooter, but ultimately the game just needed more polish.

"Working on next-gen and current gen definitely has an impact, you're developing for two different things," Hines said. "The fact that the next-gen stuff is still moving is also definitely a factor. But the most important thing was definitely just looking where it was at, what they needed to polish."

Hines said Wolfenstein: The New Order is not trying to be a shooter alone, but also a game that features driving sequences, story elements, and stealth sections. Bethesda was not willing to release the game before all components were ready to go, he said.

"Each one of those has to be excellent," Hines said. "It's not just like we're making a shooter, where if the shooting is good, then all 16 hours of the game will be good because it's all we're doing."

Overall, Hines said The New Order "needs to be the best Wolfenstein game ever made," and to do that, the publisher is not willing to cut any corners and sacrifice quality.

"It can't have the same historical impact of Wolfenstein 3D, but it can be a better game," he said.

Ubisoft will reveal new next-gen IP at Gamescom

Assassin's Creed publisher plans to give first details on an all-new next-generation game at German event this month.

Ubisoft will reveal an all-new next-generation franchise at Gamescom later this month, the French publisher announced today. No further information about this new game was divulged.

It is possible that this tease is referencing Child of Light, the all-new game from Ubisoft creative director Patrick Plourde set to be discussed at GDC Europe in the days before Gamescom.

Gamescom takes place August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany. In addition to the all-new game, Ubisoft's lineup for the show includes Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Rayman Legends, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Ubisoft is not the only major publisher making announcements for Gamescom. Blizzard Entertainment will make a "special announcement" during the show, while 2K Games plans to show off all-new XCOM content at the event.

Activision on Call of Duty: “You can’t change the rules too much”

Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin says shooter franchise would lose its appeal if it were to drastically change its formula.

The Call of Duty series would lose its appeal if it were to significantly change its gameplay formula, according to Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin. Speaking with Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Rubin said the same can be said for major sports.

"You watch sports every year, but if you changed the rules dramatically of a sport every year who would watch that? I don't think you would have as many people watching the sport," Rubin said. "Like if soccer/football were all the sudden to switch from 'OK you can't use your feet, you have to use your hands' Who'd watch that really?"

Rubin said he has no problem with the idea of a franchise evolving its gameplay over time, but this is not in the cards for Activision and Call of Duty, he said.

"You can…t change the rules too much, you have to sort of live within the boundaries that you created for yourself," Rubin said. "Other games can do that. They can do and go try out other new features and that's totally cool because as a gamer I like to play a lot of games. So I'll go out and play that open-ended open-world type game and I love it."

Overall, Rubin said the Call of Duty series will "stay with what we have perfected," that being cinematic and immersive experiences. "We are going to stick with that," he said.

Sledgehammer Games was at one point working on a third-person Call of Duty game, though this title was later "probably" canceled, as the developer moved on the Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches this holiday season for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Wii U. Activision will show off the game's multiplayer mode for the first time on August 14.
