Next-gen Tomb Raider sequel confirmed by Square Enix

Square Enix executive says the game is "well into development" for next-generation platforms.

A sequel to Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot has been confirmed by publisher Square Enix, who says the new game will be coming to next-generation consoles.

Gail Simone, who is penning the upcoming Tomb Raider comic, last week said the 2014 series will bridge the gap between the first and second games.

New Square Enix boss Phil Rogers has now confirmed that the game's existence, writing in an open letter on the company's current restructuring.

"I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel--something you may have heard about recently," he said.

"In the future, we…ll offer gamers more choice, support more platforms and try new things--but we will make sure that whatever the platform, we…ll always keep our focus on raising the quality bar. We feel that is what gamers should expect from a Square Enix game," continued Rogers.

Rogers, the CEO of Square Enix Europe, recently incorporated the position of Square Enix America CEO into his role at the company.

It was not mentioned if Crystal Dynamics were in charge of the sequel. No release date or specific platforms were mentioned.

Levine hasn’t given up on BioShock Vita

Irrational Games creative director Ken levine says he has met with Take-Two and Sony about the idea in the past few weeks.

Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine remains intent on bringing a BioShock game to the PlayStation Vita.

"I am literally trying to make a match between the parties," Levine told Kotaku, referencing Sony and Take-Two Interactive.

"They have to agree and it has to be a business deal. I've been trying to do that for a very long time," he added. "I've still very much engaged in that. I can't personally greenlight the thing myself."

Levine explained that he spoke with all parties involved in the "past couple of weeks," but did not elaborate as to the outcome of the discussions. The designer said much the same thing in the middle of July, when he said he was "trying to make a match."

BioShock for the PS Vita was announced in June 2011 during E3, though development on the game has yet to begin.

In December, Levine said the team at Irrational has an idea with a "lot of potential" for the game. However, he cautioned gamers not to get too excited about the title, saying it would be possible only if the stars align.

Star Citizen crosses $15 million

Crowdfunding campaign for Chris Roberts' PC space simulator reaches new milestone; "It's unbelievable," says developer.

Chris Roberts' all-new PC space sim Star Citizen, already the most crowdfunded project of all time, has hit a new milestone. The game's crowdfunding campaign has reached $15 million, up from $14 million in under a month.

At press time, funding for Star Citizen stands at $15,009,504 from 220,351 backers.

"It's unbelievable," reads an update on the game's website. "Star Citizen fans have helped us reach the $15 million mark without any special promotion. Ten years ago, big publishers decided space games weren…t profitable… and you are proving them very, very wrong."

The $15 million mark unlocks another flyable ship class to the game and a 42-page digital Upgrade Handbook manual, which details the process of customizing and overclocking ships.

The game's previously announced $16 million stretch goal is for an Arena mode, described as the next generation of Wing Commander's TrainSim and not a PvP game. In addition, if funding for Star Citizen reaches this level, every backer will received a laser pistol.

If funding for Star Citizen reaches $17 million, the developer said, every pledger will receive an ship upgrade containing an engine modifier and the battlecruiser ship class.

Star Citizen has been in development at Cloud Imperium Games for more than a year. The game itself includes a "sophisticated storyline" that is set in a persistent online universe.

According to Roberts, it will fuse elements of his previous games, Wing Commander and Freelancer. Support for the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift is planned.

Star Citizen is expected to release in late 2014.

Fans call for Tom Cruise to play lead in Watch Dogs movie

Top Gun, Mission Impossible star gets 37 percent of the vote, outpacing runner-ups Robert Downey Jr. and Edward Norton.

With 37 percent of the vote in a new Ubisoft-supported online poll, Top Gun and Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise is the fan's choice to play the role of Aiden Pearce in the upcoming Watch Dogs movie.

Behind Cruise is Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. (20 percent) and Fight Club lead Edward Norton (19 percent). The next most popular actor for the role is Fast and the Furious actor Paul Walker (11 percent).

Ubisoft launched the online poll last week. Cruise was the immediate front-runner. Other actors on the list include Tobey Maguire, Henry Cavill, Ryan Gosling, Clive Owen, Andrew Garfield, and Brad Pitt.

It is not clear what Ubisoft plans to do with the results of the poll and a representative for the company could not be reached for comment.

Ubisoft has a total of six movies in the pipeline. In addition to Watch Dogs, the French publisher is making movies based on its Far Cry, Rabbids, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon franchises. In all instances, Ubisoft will retain creative control.

Watch Dogs launches later this year on current- and next-generation consoles, as well as PC.
