New Song: Tegan And Sara, ‘Closer’

Tegan and Sara would like to get a little bit "Closer" on their brand-new single.

Having long ago mastered the art of an unrequited love song (and it has to be said: perfectly styled side-swept bangs), Canadian indie-pop sisters Tegan and Sara are back with a brand-new single titled "Closer," which is slated to appear as the first track on their upcoming (but still untitled) album, to be released in January 2013. As for "Closer" itself, T & S fans will be pleased to hear that the track is yet another yearning, burning single to add to their "I Pine For You" mixtapes. AND probably to your gym mix! We know -- how often does THAT playlist overlap occur??

Veering away from their trademark guitar-driven sound, "Closer" opens to strains of synth before careening into heart-pounding electro beats. Adopting a fresh, Robyn-esque edge, Tegan and Sara enthusiastically address someone they really want to get "closer" to: "It's not just all physical/ I'm the type who won't get oh so critical/ So let's make things physical/ I won't treat you like you're oh so typical," they sing, backed by a crashing pop beat. Tegan spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about the inspiration for "Closer": "...I was writing about my youth -- a time when we got closer by linking arms and walking down our school hallway, or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we'd ever had." OH GOD -- OH for the days spent talking on the phone instead of texting our crushes. Can you imagine??
